What is the status of the Portsmouth Yardstick numbers contained in the Boat Register? |
|
When you log in as an administrator and open the Boat Register you will find a button
labeled "PY Type". Clicking the button brings up a list of boat
types taken from the latest RYA Portsmouth Yardstick information. You can
choose one of these types for the boat in the register and automatically insert
the corresponding handicap. You are also free to ignore these boat types if
you wish, or to override the RYA's suggested handicap. |
|
Alongside the type of boat there is some additional information in brackets.
For instance the entry for the LASER is (Centreboard 1 U 1078 P). This is
explained in detail on the
RYA's web site
, but in summary it says that the Laser is a centreboard boat (i.e., a dinghy),
that it has one sail (U) that its Portsmouth number is 1078, which is a primary
yardstick. |
|
Note that in recent years the RYA has had very poor returns from clubs, especially
for cruiser racing. The Portsmouth Yardstick scheme relies entirely on club
returns to build up its statistics. The information it publishes officially
therefore only contains a small number of PY numbers, limited to those types of
boat that have primary or secondary yardsticks. |
|
However they do make suggestions as to what clubs might like to try tentatively
for other types of boats. These numbers are included in HAL's Race Results
as either Recorded Numbers (R in the list) or Trial Numbers (T in the list).
You should use these numbers with caution . They are a starting point
for building up your own statistics on the performance of boats in your fleet, but
nothing more. |
