HAL's Race Results - Scoring Made Easy

Option 2. Score ashore immediately after each race

  • This can be as fast as doing it on the committee boat, if there is somebody standing by ashore to process the results as soon as they arrive.
  • You need reliable communications to the shore, which is usually best by mobile phone. VHF is an alternative, but ties up valuable radio time and clogs the air waves.
    • Tip. Make sure the person receiving the results over the pbone, or radio, has a pre-printed form with line numbers on it. Read the results in blocks of ten boats and confirm that sender and receiver are both on the same line number.
  • The person ashore needs to print provisional results and get them onto notice boards as soon as possible.
  • It is useful to get them onto the web immediately, marked as provisional, so that competitors' friends and family can see them.

Personal opinion. This is often the most practical option. It is reliable and only needs phone or radio communications with the committee boat. It is better than Option 1 unless you have a committee boat with plenty of accommodation, an experienced team and a good on-board Internet connection.
